本年度も引き続き新型コロナウイルスによる影響を受ける中で、近畿および周辺地域を対象とした基礎資料の収集と分析を中心に作業を実施した。対象地域の一つとした東播磨地域、特に加古川流域地域は、前期から中期にかけて多くの古墳が集中する。その中には埋葬施設が判明していながら明確な評価がなされていないものも多く、また複数の小エリアに分かれて古墳築造が見られるなどケーススタディとして適した地域である。本地域における基本的な様相の整理とそのパターンの分析などを実施し、その成果については学会発表として公表した。また上記地域を含め、基礎的状況の整理を行った畿内および周辺の複数地域を対象に、その葬制変化パターンの比較分析を実施した。具体的には近畿の各地域において、前期から中期にかけて営まれる首長墳を対象に、その埋葬施設の構造詳細において継続した地域性が認められるのか、あるいは刷新性が顕著となるのかに着目し、その継承性の有無および地域偏差の問題に取り組んだ。その結果中期になり継承状況における大きな画期が存在するとともに、先立って前期段階でも一部地域においては、新しい秩序への動きが見られ始め、こうした遺構資料の状況にはその背景として政権中枢部による戦略的な葬制秩序のコントロールが存在したとの見通しを得た。この作業についても成果公表を行っており、今後論文の形で再整理、公表を予定している。この他、既往成果について整理・改変し、図書としての公表を行ったほか、中期の埋葬施設にかかる基礎データの集成、現地踏査と出土資料調査を随時実施している。
