Contested Public Memorials and Conservative Activism in Japan and the United States

Fieldwork for this project was conducted in the eastern part of the United States and Japan. This included interviews with activists/experts and the collection of texts and other documents that relate to the topics of historical commemoration and citizen activism. Research data was collected and is in the process of being analyzed. It is hoped that this data can form the basis for future presentations at international conferences, or be used when writing journal articles or book chapters. An English language paper based partly on my Japanese fieldwork was published in a journal: "New Religious Movements and Conservative Politics in Japan: An Overview of Electoral and Non-Electoral Political Activities of Happy Science and the Happiness Realization Party." The Bulletin of the Research Institute for Japanese Studies 15 (2023): 274-260. The journal article is open-source, so it can be read by both researchers and the general public.
