项目摘要

資料上の制約からその実態の把握が困難な11世紀以前の音楽・芸能について、社会的な脈絡からその意義について検証すべく、表現手段や鑑賞の対象としての音楽・芸能の分析ではなく、「なぜ」「その時」「そこで」「その人々が」行ったのかに着目して検証を行った。演奏だけではなく、その演奏を可能にした社会構造、更にはその演奏を視聴すること・させることがもたらす社会的な効果をも含めた、人間の営みとしての音楽・芸能の考察、という点が特徴的である。具体的には、雅楽寮、近衛府、内教坊という３つの古代日本の朝廷における奏楽機関に着目し、それぞれの設立事情、公的機関としての性格、および儀礼における奏楽の実態について分析を行った。更に、それぞれが奏楽を担当した儀礼の成立・展開を政治的背景と関連させて検証した結果、３つの奏楽機関はそれぞれの儀礼で確認される君臣関係を表象し、儀礼の意義を強調する役割を担っていたこと、つまり音楽・芸能の奏上は朝廷内の秩序を体現する、といった政治的・社会的に重要な意義を持っていたことを指摘した。中国の儀礼における奏楽とは全く様相が異なるものの、支配者層の秩序を維持する、という目的では共通していたことが窺われ、更に中国側の儀礼との比較を進めて両国の社会状況、とりわけ政治的背景や支配原理の差異が反映されている可能性を探る予定である。なお、当該年度は研究成果公開促進費（学術図書）の助成を受け、本研究課題の前提となる一連の研究成果を書籍化した。校正などで予想以上に時間をとられてしまったが、他の研究者からの批判や助言を受けてより本研究課題を充実させたい。
