本研究は、平安時代後期から鎌倉時代の青森県を中心とした北東北の仏教彫刻を対象とし、当該期の造形の伝播過程を明らかにすることを目的とする。その手段として、制作年代・作者系統の判別を可能とする仏像の細部形式を活用し、中央・平泉の仏像と、北東北の仏像とを比較することで、北東北における仏像の造形の伝播過程を、造形に即して明らかにすることを試みるものである。今年度は、おもに神将像と菩薩像について研究を進めた。神将像については、中央・平泉の作例を中心に、制作年代、作者系統、地域の展開を個別に把握することを目的とし、中央と、平泉およびその周辺の仏像の資料収集、各細部形式の体系化をそれぞれおこなった。特に平安時代後期の中央の仏像と平泉の仏像の比較、および鎌倉時代前期の慶派仏師と他派仏師による仏像の比較をおこない、各部の甲の細部形式について共通点、相違点を明確にした。そのうえで、青森県南部町所在の毘沙門天像の調査、資料収集を実施し、鎌倉時代の中央における神将像の細部形式を踏襲することを確認した。菩薩像については、平安時代末期の平泉とその周辺の仏像に多く共通する着衣形式について、資料収集に基づく新たな作例を加え、岩手県瑠璃光院大日如来像を中心に論考としてまとめた。また青森県法眼寺大日如来像の調査を実施し、基礎資料を収集した。今後、寺史の検討や同寺の他の仏像との関係性をふまえ、制作時期の再検討をおこなう予定である。
