本研究は、日本各地にのこる「伝説・神話・昔話」に着目し、そこから、地域住民が、先祖代々、無意識に、継承してきた造形感覚や造形イメージを読みとる。こうした、地域住民の深層心理に息づく造形感覚のことを、本研究では「地域深層造形」と呼ぶ。地域深層造形とは、要するに、美術造形における「方言」のようなものである。「地域深層造形」研究の先駆者として、二人の建築家がいる。増田友也氏（1914ー81）と渡辺豊和氏（1938 - ）である。増田友也氏が書いた『建築的空間の原始的構造』によれば、オーストラリアのアルンタ族、およびインドのトダ族の建築的な空間造形（祭祀場、住居、季節間の移動経路等）には、彼らが先祖代々信じる「伝説・神話・昔話」が投影されているのだという。ところが増田氏は、その「伝説・神話・昔話」の内容の詳細にまでは言及しておらず、「伝説・神話・昔話」と空間造形のあいだの相関性が不明瞭である。本研究は、アルンタ族とトダ族の「伝説・神話・昔話」の詳細を、原著分析から明らかにし、それらと空間造形の相関性を明らかにした。建築家の渡辺豊和氏は、公共建築を設計する際、その地域の「伝説・神話・昔話」から、地域住民が無意識に欲している建築イメージを読みとり、空間造形にとりいれてきた。この「地域住民が無意識に欲している建築イメージ」が、建築分野における「地域深層造形」に相当する。筆者は、これまでの研究で、その方法の一端を明らかにしてきたが、いまだ未解明な部分を、渡辺氏本人への聞き取り調査、および渡辺氏の建築作品と著作等の分析から、明らかにした。渡辺氏が設計した公共建築と「伝説・神話・昔話」とのあいだにみられる、深層心理学的な関連性を分析し、「地域深層造形」を建築表現へと転化する、渡辺氏独自の方法論の一端を明らかにした。
