本研究は、地域に根ざし、ミッション実現のために活動するアメリカの非営利劇場の支援者拡大・資金調達の活動（デベロップメント）に注目し、地域社会の多様なコミュニティ・メンバーによって多元的に支えられ、また地域社会の発展を支えるような「公共劇場」の運営についての知見を得ることを目的としている。非営利劇場における「デベロップメント」機能が、どのような戦略と活動を展開しているのか、その実態把握からまずは検討を進めていく。初年度は、訪問調査のための資料収集、今後の比較検討のための日本における現状把握と事例収集を行ない、特にデベロップメント機能を担う劇場スタッフに求められる技能や資質を文献および求人情報などから探った。Development Director という職名は広く一般的なものであるが、非営利劇場の事業規模が大きい場合には「大口寄付担当」や「個人寄付担当」など対象別の担当を置いたり、規模が小さい場合はマーケティング担当を兼ねるケースもあった。また、特に施設の増改築などのための臨時の大規模な資金調達キャンペーンを指揮する担当を募集するなど、多種多様な手法、目的、対象、規模の資金調達によって非営利劇場の運営が成立していることが確認できた。劇場の事業規模によって、業務内容や責任、求められる資質に相違はあるが、文章および口頭での巧みなコミュニケーション能力、部門間の理解と調整能力、精神的なタフさが求められる点は共通している。非営利劇場の運営に特化したソフトウエア（ニューヨークのメトロポリタン・オペラが開発したtessitura の他にも複数のソフトウエアがある）が、チケッティングだけでなく、顧客や寄付者管理のデータベースとしてデベロップメント活動を支えていることが分かった。現在のデベロップメント担当者に関する外形的な業務内容、スキル、求められる資質については概要を確認できた。
