愛知大学語学教育研究室紀要『言語と文化』第46号（pp. 27-42）において、“Margaret Hale as a Walker”のタイトルで論文を投稿した。本論は、エリザベス・ギャスケルの『北と南』(1854)におけるヒロインの歩く行為に注目し、19世紀イギリスにおいて制約の多かった女性が歩行を通して自身の精神と肉体に向き合い、変化の激しい近代化のなかで自身の階級、ジェンダーのアイデンティティーを模索する様子を考察したものである。本研究は、社会学者アンリ・ルフェーブルの「空間とは社会的な産物である」という基本洞察から影響を受けた、地理学者ティム・クレスウェルによる「移動論」に基づく。彼は移動性を社会的に生産された動きと見なし、「移動性とは近代とは何であるか」の中心に位置すると指摘する。道路や交通網の改良が進み、列車や馬車での移動が発展する一方、シャーロット・マスィ―ソンが言及するように歩行は当時の女性の最も基本的な移動(mobility)の形態として重要である。『北と南』のヒロイン、マーガレット・ヘイルは徒歩愛好者として登場するが、彼女の歩く範囲は牧師の娘としての慈善活動の範疇を超え、やがて移り住む産業都市ミルトンにおいては新興中産階級と労働者階級双方の間で歩行を通して人間関係を築くことで、プライベートとパブリックの領域の区分、階級差による壁を崩す。こうした、マーガレットの当時の社会規範から逸脱した歩きは近代化における人の移動と空間の関係の多様化を示す。19世紀イギリス社会を写実的に描いたギャスケルの作品『北と南』において、モバイルなヒロインの移動性を近代化とからめて考察したことは、今後、同時代の作家と比較するうえでたいへん意義のあることである。
