本研究では、世界文学アラビアンナイトの原点である『ガラン版千一夜物語』の成立において、翻訳者としてしかみなされてこなかったアントワーヌ・ガランが、どのような素材をどのように加工してテクストを作者として創作していったのかを分析し、さらにその創作過程の背景にあるガランの知的環境が創作意図やテーマ設定にどのように作用したかを分析するために、以下の研究項目を実施した。研究の第一段階として、ガラン版所収の物語を翻訳の底本や素材がどの程度確定しているかによって三グループに分ける作業をおこなった。そのうえで、底本や素材が確定済みの第１グループに対しては、物語加工のタイプを整理するための枠組みを設定した。そこでは、ガラン版とガラン写本の対照分析によって物語加工を誤訳・削除・加筆・超訳に分類した。次に、底本や素材が未確定の第２グループに対しては、準備研究で選定した写本の文献言語学的分析で素材テクストを確定させ、整理済み物語加工タイプと比較してタイプを修正する作業をおこなった。とくに、すでにガラン版日本語訳を刊行する際の予備的考察で翻訳底本の見当をつけた写本（フランス国立図書館所蔵）の文献言語学的分析で同定するための作業をおこなった。とくに底本や素材が未確定の第２グループのなかでも、世界文学として影響の大きいシンドバード航海記を、上記の研究分析の具体的な対象として取り上げて分析をおこなった。これまでの研究で新たに発見したシンドバード航海記の写本による校訂本（すでに成果として刊行済み）をもとに、日本語訳と注釈による分析作業をおこなうことで（「ペティス・ド・ラ・クロワ版『シンドバード航海記』より第一航海の翻訳と注解」『国立民族学博物館研究報告』に掲載予定）、ガランが利用した底本の確定作業の比較資料となるだけでなく、インド洋海域世界におけるアラブ世界との関係に関する資料を提供することができた。
