今年度は小学校６年生を対象に、メタ言語能力育成を目的とした授業の効果を検証した。メタ言語能力とは、言語そのものの構造や機能について意識をめぐらせることができる能力のことである。本研究では、メタ言語能力が外国語習熟度に正の影響を与えるということが先行研究で明らかになっていることから、学校現場におけるメタ言語能力育成の具体的な方法やその効果に関する知見を得ることを目的とした。実施方法は、調査協力校の英語・国語担当の教員によって、語順・文の構造・あいまい性を扱う内容で5回×45分の授業を実施した。授業は、基本的に日本語表現を対象に解説され、必要に応じて英語を含む外国語の表現を取り上げる形で進められた。対象となった66名の児童は、事前・事後にメタ言語能力テスト、および、言語学習に関する質問紙（動機づけ・信念）に回答した。ただし、事前の質問紙調査については全調査協力児の約半数の回答しか得られなかった。結果として、メタ言語能力テストのスコアに有意な上昇が見られた（文分節課題: (t (59) = -5.827 , p = .000, d = .67), あいまい性判断課題: (t (59) = -7.436 , p = .000, d = .98)）。一方、動機づけ関連変数のうち、言語学習に対する自己効力感については有意なスコアの低下が確認された（国語学習に対する自己効力感: (t (31) = -2.058 , p = .048, d = . 25), 英語学習に対する自己効力感: t (31) = -2.806 , p = .009, d = .28））。改善点はあるものの、今回の教授法、および教材は児童のメタ言語能力向上に寄与するという示唆が得られた。
