高校に在籍する日本語指導が必要な生徒（以下、JSL高校生）に対する日本語指導が在籍学級で受ける教科の授業の理解や授業参加にどう役立っているのかを明らかにするために、今年度は、①日本語力、②読解、③作文、④進路についての意識、の４つの調査を行った。日本語力についての調査は日本語支援で行っている日本語能力試験対策の効果を文字・語彙・読解に準拠したテストを実施した。日本語支援で行っている日本語の規則や読解の得点に向上がみられるか、教科学習の基礎となる日本語力は向上しているかという指標として捉える意義がある。読解は明示的に読解ストラテジーを指導する活動を中心に読解力テスト及び学習者の情意面の変化を調査した。教科の内容を理解し授業参加するためには教科書等の長文を読む力が必要である。読解はJSL高校生にとって苦手意識が強く、情意面での変化は教科学習の成功の可否に関わる可能性がある。作文は、JSL高校生が書いた作文(賛否両論文)から、滞在1年～3年の間で文の複雑さがどのように変化するのか、また、滞在1年～3年の間で文の正確さの特徴には変化がみられるのかを調査した。授業、進学、就職などで、文章によって選抜される機会は多い。JSL高校生の書く文章の特徴や問題点を捉えることは作文の支援がどのような効果をもたらし、それが授業参加・成績、進路決定に与える影響などを考えるうえで重要である。進路についての意識はインタビュー調査を行った。進路については家族や周囲のコミュニティの影響もあるとされており、JSL高校生のライフプランやキャリア意識の形成を長期的に見ていく必要がある。進路意識は学習意欲と関わるため、個々の進路意識とその変容をインタビューによって丁寧にみていくことは情意面の分析のために重要である。
