(1)航海途上の船内における経済活動の分析を行った。船上遺言書には、船員たちの生き生きとした船上生活や経済活動が描かれていることがわかった。船内における経済活動は売り掛けによる貸借関係で成立しており、船員たち自身によって、規則化されていったものと考えられる。船員たちは、とくに賃金や食糧問題に関して慣習的な権利が侵されていると感じた場合、徒党をなして抵抗し、事業主、海軍士官層や国王に対して彼らの力を誇示することができたのである。しかしながら、彼らは単なる暴徒ではなかった。彼らの抗議の手段は、イングランドの労働文化の中に深く根付いていた伝統的なやり方に基づいており、その目的も秩序の回復やそのための支援を求めるものであり、それが聞き入れられるであろうという確かな期待感が、そこにはあったのである。(2)16世紀イングランドの船乗りと海事共同体(maritime community)の検討を行った。ヨーロッパの商業的ならびに地理的拡張の時代が、海軍や私掠船によるスペインとの海上戦争と同様に、イングラドの船乗りの社会に大きな影響を与えることになった。この間に船乗りの間で相互依存のネットワーク、共通のサブ・カルチャ、血縁関係、友人関係、仕事関係、賃借関係が形成され、海に関わる職業を持つ人々は、イングランドというより大きな社会の中の１つのコミュニティ(海事共同体)において生きていることを強く認識することができたのである。確かに1580年代以降に、かつて経験したことの泣いたダイナる外的圧力に直面し緊張が高まったが、船乗りたちは、変革が自分たちにとっていかに得策であろうとなかろうと、彼らの慣習や伝統的実践行為を執拗なまでに守ろうとしたのである。エリザベス時代の船乗りないし海事共同体は、遠洋航海、私掠事業や海上戦争を通じて、国家と社会に対して彼ら独自の関わり方をするようになっていたのである。
