本研究は、16世紀イングランドの印刷業者リチャード・トテルを、法学院をめぐるトテルの人脈的繋がりの観点から捉え直す。初年度は、先行研究にも立ち返りながら、トテルと関わりのあった法学院サークルに焦点を当て、文学作品の精読とイギリスでの資料調査を行った。特にインナーテンプルサークルの調査を次のように掘り下げた。まず、二つの悲劇作品―アーサー・ブルックによる翻訳 『ロミウスとジュリエット』(1562)と、5名のインナーテンプラーによる『サレルノのギスモンド』(1566?)―を精読・比較し、インナーテンプルサークルの政治的傾向を特定した。両作品からは、登場人物を中心とする新たな脚色が共通して見られた。こうした脚色は、読者や観客に、作中の恋人たちの死へ同情を促し、結果的に当時の王位継承問題を示唆するためのものであったと解釈した。そして両作品からは、王位継承問題をめぐって、法学院生等のキャサリン・グレイを擁護する政治的姿勢が窺えると考察した。この研究成果として、現在論文執筆に取り掛かっている。イギリスでの資料調査では、特に『ギスモンド』の写しを含むコモンプレイスブックHargrave MS 205（大英図書館）をめぐって、期待以上に研究の幅を拡げることができた。例えば、先行研究が未だ無い"A crowne of vertues worthy a prince"に注目したところ、この作品だけ他と筆跡が異なり、本書が複数の法学院関係者の間で所有されていた可能性が高いことが分かった。さらに、トテルが出版したサリー伯による英語訳『アエネーイス第４巻』(1557)は、法学院での受容度が高かったことも窺えた。したがって、このコモンプレイスブックをより解析することが本研究を発展させるために重要であると考え、作品分析での考察も踏まえながら、法学院文化の観点からこのマテリアルの調査を続けている。

This study is aimed at exploring the relationship between printing industry and law school in the 16th century. In the beginning of the year, the first research was carried out in the field of law school, and the data survey of literary works was carried out.
