本研究は、ドイツ宗教改革による信仰対立によっても平和が維持された要因をアウクスブルク宗教平和の確立過程について帝国諸侯とくにカトリック諸侯の動向を検討することから解明するものである。1555年のアウクスブルク宗教平和は教皇により批判されたにも関わらず、カトリック諸侯により容認され、確立した過程の検討からその要因を考察する。初年度は、計画に従って関連文献・資料の調査を行い、とくに帝国議会文書の検討を中心に進めた。マクシミリアン2世の即位に関わる1564年から在位期間の75年議会に至る帝国議会の記録からは、皇帝と新旧両派の交渉を中心に、とくにプロテスタントの協議議事録から信仰平和に関する各諸侯の見解、それに対する皇帝の反応を確認できた。しかし、カトリック側の議事録は結論が中心で、個々の見解の把握は難しい。また、当該時期のカトリック諸侯に関する専論も少なく、選定侯であるマインツ、トリアー、ケルンに関するものがあるに留まる。それらを入手し検討した結果、マインツはメッス戦以降のフランスの勢力拡大に苦慮し、トリアーはプロテスタント臣民の増加と近隣ファルツへの対応、ケルンはネーデルラントへの対応に迫られ、いずれもアウグスブルク宗教平和の条項を梃子に対処しようとしていたことが確認できた。今後は他のカトリック聖界諸侯・世俗諸侯の動向を確認することが次の課題である。
