Modern Cities and Archaeology: A Study on the Revalorization of Archaeological Remains from a Cultural Heritage Perspective

For FY2022, this research project aimed to expand the scope of Archaeological Heritage to a wider region around La Molina District in Lima, Peru. To achieve this objective, this research focused not only on visible monumental archaeological sites, but also on archaeological features in the landscape that have been covered or changed in previous periods (ancient road and canal networks, and historical indigenous towns) or destroyed (historical agriculture centers called “haciendas”). Through the analysis of aerial photography taken during the 1940’s and 1960’s, this project was able to reconstruct the location of these features and verify its degree of visibility. Among local population, key actors were identified to obtain information about the recent history of these features.Since archaeological and historical collections play an important role on the historical perspective of the public in Peru, this project continued the registry of the local collection at La Molina District, aiming to measure its impact by sharing the information in the future with local residents.Also, to propose new ways of using archaeological and historical features to build community in La Molina District, a comparison with similar features in Japan was carried out on urban and rural contexts by gathering information on how local communities use and preserve their cultural resources.
