本研究では占領期の日本の博物館に対するGHQの施策を明らかにする。日本では第二次世界大戦後の占領期に様々な博物館改革が実施されており、国立博物館については、その任務や所属が数年ごとに改められるなど、激動の時代にあった。既往研究においては、こうした状況を個々の博物館の成立史として解釈し、主に日本側資料に基づいた歴史研究が進められてきた。本研究は『GHQ/SCAP文書』を用いることで、GHQの視座に立って、その歴史を再考するものである。国立国会図書館所蔵の『GHQ/SCAP文書』はGHQの各部局において保存されていた占領行政資料であり、総数3000万枚にも及ぶとされる膨大な資料である。同資料には分類番号が付されており、マイクロフィッシュの形態で保存されている。本研究の初年度は、コロナ禍の影響で国立国会図書館の利用が抽選予約制になっていることに鑑み、同館の開館時間や入場制限に左右されずに自身の研究環境で分類番号「840（文化財）」のマイクロフィッシュを効率的に調査する体制を整えた。調査の結果、GHQが日本の博物館の総体を理解するために作成した各種報告書の存在を確認した。また、GHQの民間情報教育局の会議録には表題にMuseumが含まれているものが300件以上存在していることを確認した。その他調査した資料を合計し、今年度は『GHQ/SCAP文書』のマイクロフィッシュ 175枚約17,500コマの調査・収集を実現した。また、今年度は国立公文書館、東京国立博物館、神奈川県立近代美術館において、戦前戦後に文化財保護に尽力した日本人専門家の資料の調査を実施した。特に、神奈川県立近代美術館葉山館美術図書室が所蔵する『矢代文庫』では、『GHQ/SCAP文書』で明らかになった事実を補完する資料や、矢代幸雄の書簡や自筆資料を中心に17件の資料の調査・撮影を実施した。
