先行研究の把握のために図書等を購入し、本研究の問題点やこれからの課題等について洗い出しを行った。その結果インド洋西域における奴隷貿易でマダガスカル島が大きな役割を担っていたことが、あらためて明確になった。マダガスカル島内の民族を単位とした諸政治権力とフランスやイギリスなどの西洋列強による島内統一をめぐる争いのなかで、インド洋西域の奴隷貿易が活発になった。またザンジバルやモーリシャス島では、アメリカを中心にグローヴの需要が高まり、その生産に従事する労働力として、マダガスカルやその対岸であるアフリカ大陸の東部地域から奴隷が必要とされた。さらにマダガスカルでは、先述した通り、島内統一をめぐる争いは軍事衝突となり、男性が兵士となり、彼らが多く従事していた農業の労働力不足に直面することになった。そこでマダガスカルもまた積極的に奴隷を現在のモザンビーク周辺から受け入れていた側面もあったのである。マダガスカル島内における奴隷価格の変化などからも、奴隷の需給などマダガスカルが、奴隷の周辺島嶼部への輸出とモザンビーク周辺から輸入の両側面を担っていたことがより明確になった。なおインド洋聖域のこのような奴隷をめぐる動きにはアメリカを中心とした西洋列強のクローブや象牙の需要の高まりと連動していた。より具体的には、クローブはアメリカでのケチャップの需要拡大、象牙はヨーロッパでのピアノやビリヤードの人気の高まりと奴隷労働力は大きな関連があった。以上の経緯について、より詳細に検討し題名「インド洋西域における奴隷貿易の展開 」関西大学『経済学論集』72(特集号) にまとめて発表した。
