本研究の目的は、大規模な自然災害（i.e.,地震、台風など）が企業の探索的行動に与える影響を明らかにすることである。既存研究では、探索的行動に影響を与える企業レベルや産業レベルの要因に関するものがほとんどであり、より大きなマクロレベルの要因（国家・社会レベル）についてはほとんど明らかにされていない。しかし、マクロレベルの要因は個人の行動変化に影響を与えることが実証されており、企業の戦略や方向性を決める意思決定者にも影響を与える可能性が高い。そのため、大規模な自然災害前後での企業の探索的行動の変化や震災後に成長した企業の特徴を調査・分析することで、企業の行動理論研究に新たな示唆を与えることを目的としている。本年度の研究において、日本と米国の全上場企業のパネルデータを用いて、自然災害前後で企業の探索的行動にどのような変化が生じるかDID(Difference in Difference)分析を行うことを目標としていた。米国のデータも分析する理由は、同時期に国家規模で大規模な自然災害を経験していないため、同期間の日本の探索的行動の変化が国際的な情勢の変化の影響などではないことを示すためである。日本と米国の特許データをもとに企業年度ごとの探索と活用の程度を計測し、東日本大震災前後での探索と活用の程度の変化を分析した結果、日本企業は2011年の東日本大震災の後に探索的活動が低下していることを実証した。本研究の分析結果を論文にまとめ、現在海外の学術誌に投稿中である。
