本研究は清末期の1902年に湯剣が翻訳した『新撰家政学』（原作下田歌子　1900年）に着目し、日本の女子教育情報が翻訳された経緯と中国の社会への普及過程を明らかにすることが目的である。清末中央政府は1904年（光緒30年）に教育制度を公布した際、外国の女子教育教科書として日本の女子教育者である下田歌子（以下は下田）の『家政学』を名挙げて勧めた。下田の『新選家政学』は、当時の中国に4つの翻訳版があり、異なる出版社から刊行された。『新撰家政学』は中国の近代教育学制「奏定学堂章程」が出された翌年の1905年に再版され、また、女子教育制度に関する「女子小学堂章程」と「女子師範学堂章程」が出された1907年にも再版された。さらに1941年にも再度再版された。研究の目的を遂行するために、令和4・5年度は中国現地で湯に関する資・史料の発掘し、収集する予定をしているが、生憎初年度は中国の「ゼロコロナ」政策によるまちの封鎖などより厳しい対策を取っていたため、計画を余儀なく修正した。代わりに、2回に渡って実践女子大学図書館や下田歌子研究所等に足を運び、中国人宛ての書簡等、新たな活字史・資料を可能な限り購入・収集した。
