本研究の目的は、第一に「近代童話／童謡」の文芸的特徴を確認し、国語科教材としての今日的意義・有用性を明らかにすること。第二に、教材史の調査をしたうえで、過去に教材化された「近代童話／童謡」の現代的な活用の検討をするとともに、新教材を発掘すること。そして第三に、「近代童話／童謡」教材を分類・整理・体系化し、小学校・中学校・高等学校での有効な活用に向けた提案を行うことである。第一年目にあたる2022年度は、「近代童話／童謡」の文芸的特徴の確認に力を注ぐとともに、1949年から2020年までの小学校国語教科書に掲載された「近代童話」の調査を行った。また、過去に教材化された近代童話として小川未明の「野ばら」を取り上げ、その現代的な活用に関して研究討議を行った。近代童話の文芸的特徴の究明にあたっては、近代から現代への流れの検討や、「現代児童文学」が「近代童話／童謡」から引き継いだものの確認、「現代児童文学」と「近代童話／童謡」との違いの確認にも積極的に取り組んだ。現代児童文学としては、「あまんきみこ」「宮川ひろ」の特徴を検討したが、その成果は「近代童話／童謡」の行方の探究につながるものと考えている。小学校国語教科書に掲載された「近代童話」の調査に関しては、未確認のものを残しているものの、まずは26作家125作品をリスト化することができたが、何を「近代童話」とみなすかという課題も浮上してきている。1959年から1989年までの間に小学校国語教科書に掲載されていた教材「野ばら」については、その文芸的特徴が戦争を語るのに適切といえないのではないかという問題を、検討課題として改めて認識した。
