大正新教育の影響を受け、国語教育では文学教材において、子どもの自由な「想像」を尊重する「読み」が成立した。しかしながら、昭和期に入ると、この「読み」のあり方は次第に変容していく。子どもの自由な「読み」は、次第にナショナリズムに組み込まれていくのである。その過程では、子どもの主体的で多様的な「読み」と作者重視の一元的な「読み」の対立の中、前者は、次第にナショナリズムの枠に「囲繞された主体的な読み」に変容していった。本課題研究は、そのプロセスを実証的に捉え、日本の言語文化形成にどのような影響を与えたのかについて検証することを目的とするものである。研究系列Ａでは、昭和初期に使用された第四期の国定読本所収文学教材に内包されたナショナルな視点の形成プロセスについて明らかにするため、同読本に関する先行研究を踏まえ、読本編纂者の残した資料、当時の風景画像に対する調査を行った。その結果、教科書所収版への改稿過程が明らかになり、その編纂の方向性を捉えることができた。研究系列Ｂでは、昭和初期の国語科における文学教材の授業実践および幼稚園における言語教育実践史料の収集・分析により、子どもの「読み」（受容）のあり方について、ナショナリズムとの関わりについて継時的に明らかにすることを目指した。その結果、教育実践の場において、昭和６年以降、大正自由教育に源流を持つ、「児童主体」の姿勢を前提しつつも、国家主義的思想を標榜する教育実践事例が散見され、教育現場での「ねじれ」現象の様態を捉えることができた。研究系列Ｃでは、課外読物や子どもが受容したメディア情報を収集し、その受容の実態について継時的かつ実証的に研究を進めた。童話連盟機関誌への調査を通して、口演童話の発展形としてとしてのラジオによる放送劇（理科童話　神話）が強いメッセージ性を以て子どもたちに影響を及ぼしていったことが明らかとなった。
