项目摘要

平成11年度も文献調査を主とした。調査結果の概要は,以下のとおりである。明治6年より7年までに刊行された読本や文法・漢文・作文・習字関係書の文献調査,及びそれらの分析・検討のおおよそを行った。調査対象文献数は14件であった。依然として,日記文の指導に直接つながるような記述は見つかっていない。が,明治中期から後期にかけて頻出する日記文作法論を産むところの前提となる事情は,いくつか見出すことができた。紙幅の都合により,その中で,最も注目した点について,以下,記すことにしたい。それは,いわゆる「定義文」の存在である。好例は,『小学読本』(明治7年8月改正,師範学校編纂、文部省刊行)である。例えば「第一」に,「〇食物と、なすべきものは、種々なり、/第一は、穀物なり、〇穀物とは、稲、麦、粟、黍の類をいふ、○此等は、皆田畠に、作りて、其実を取り、或は炊き、或は炙りて、食物となるなり、…」とあるのが典型である。こうした定義文が発展して、論説文の形へつながり、実例を見ることになる。この期においては、前年度でも触れたように,まず叙事的文体の習熟という面が出現する。そこには、「例」という意識が存在するだろう。さらに、上記のように、定義文から論説文という発展を見せるが、ここには、「理」の精神.意識があると捉えたい。「理」の意識とは、ものごとの道理・筋道を求めていくことである.このような基本的文章制作態度が重んじられていたことは,自己の記録としての日記を書くという態度に通じるものがあると判断する。
