日本人の「自然」に対する意識の変化を把握し,工学的に日本人の好ましい自然像を明らかとすることを本研究の目的とした.1)徳島新聞の発刊時の明治時代から現在までの100年余りの8月の記事の中から「自然」という言葉を全て抽出した.これを名詞的用法,形容詞的用法,副詞的用法に区別し,語数の変化を調べた.その結果,昭和30年半ばから名詞的用法を中心に語数が急増した.この直接的な理由は高度成長期に伴って全国で公害問題が顕在化したためと考えられる.内面的には公害問題が木,川,山,海などで表してきた個々に生じたのではなく,より複合的に広範囲に影響が見られたために,それらを総称する言葉として「自然」を使用し始めたものと考えられる.2)記事の中で自然的な用法の「自然」という言葉どのように捉えているかについて検討した結果,賞賛,保護,大切,イメージを伝えるといったものが大半を占めていた.その一方で地震,台風,洪水などの恐怖,災害などを伝える場合に「自然」を使用することはなかった.3)10から60代までの男女200名余りを対象に,「自然」を修飾する言葉を選ばせたところ,大きな,雄大な,美しいといった良いイメージを表す形容詞が大半を占め,恐ろしいなどの自然災害を表現するものはほとんど選ばれなかった.4)NHK四国による残したい四国の自然アンケート調査結果について検討した.その結果,海岸林や農業用ため池なども選ばれており,人為的に造られ,管理されたものであっても自然と認識されていることがわかった.
