本研究では研究対象として、古代以来現在に至るまで宗教都市として機能し続けている高野山を取り上げ、同山が開山以来如何にして都市として整備されてきたのかを、子院(宿坊)・門前町の2つの構成要素について検討することを目的とした。この目的のもと、以下の作業を行った。(1)高野山内の現況調査 1996年8月に住宅地図と山内古図を対応させたベースマップを作成した上、現況調査を行い高野山内の空間的な状況を調査し、写真撮影・配置図・調査カードを作成した。この結果、山内の子院には、主として3種の建築類型が存在し、方位・地形と密接な関係を有しつつ配置されていることが判明した。(2)資史料調査 高野山の形成史についての先行研究を調査するとともに、刊本史料の調査を行い、作業用のデータシート・データベースを作成した。この中で、『紀伊続風土記』『紀伊国名所図会』『高野山壇上寺家絵図』が都市史史料として極めて優れていることが明らかになった。(3)子院の変遷についての分析 子院の変遷(主として増殖過程)についての分析、及び空間構成秩序の分析を行った。以上の作業から、同山が発展していく段階では主として、A総寺が複数の子院群を均等に扱いつつ計画的に配置する場合、B有力子院がその境内地を分割しつつ小規模子院や町屋を付着させていく場合、の二つのケースがあり複雑な様相を呈するが、最終的には山内に一種の共同体ともいうべき地縁的なまとまり(「谷」「院中」)が形成される、との見通しを得るに至った。
