本研究では明治期に刊行された仏教新聞・雑誌を調査し、そこに掲載された小説作品における情報のデータベース化を行う。そうすることで、これまで見過ごされてきた小説作品群を包括的に可視化するとともに、新たに明治期の仏教文学研究における基盤を構築することを目指す。また明治期の社会状況や文学史・仏教史・宗教史等と照らし合わせながら、これらの小説作品群がどのように位置づけられるのかを考察する。令和4年度は国立国会図書館・東京大学近代日本法政史料センター（明治新聞雑誌文庫）を中心に仏教新聞・雑誌の調査を行い、掲載された小説作品および文学に関連する記事の収集を行った。その結果、小説は約400作品を収集することができた。これらの作品はタイトルや見出しに「小説」「文藝」等と付されているものが多い。またそれとは別に、見出しが無い等の理由も含め、現時点では判断を保留したものが約300点ある。これらは令和5年度から詳しく内容の分析を進め、慎重に分類を行う。その他、文学に関連する記事が約100点見つかった。当時の文壇に関するものも多く、明治期の文学作品と仏教・宗教との関係について等、分析を進めていくうえでの重要な手がかりになると考えられる。以上のように令和4年度は資料の調査と、収集した小説作品等における情報のデータ化が主な研究内容である。令和5年度も引き続き調査を続け、さらに小説作品の収集を行うとともに、これまでに収集した作品の分析も進めていく。
