現地調査は2022年10月から2022年12月、2022年2月末から3月末の3ヶ月間、ビハール州モティハリの農村部、プネー州のアシュティの農村部の調査、ハブ工房、金融業者の調査を行った。モティハリの農村部の調査では、故郷の村で革製品工場を開設したムスリムが見られ、出身農村部へ職人が環流していく将来が予見された。アシュティの農村部の調査では、ムンバイーの工房で獲得した資金で故郷に農地を買い、両親や親戚が自作農として自立していった事実が確認できた。金融業者の調査では、ビーシーと呼ばれる頼母子講への参加、宝石業者、インフォーマル金融業者への聞き取りを行った。これら3つの金融ルートを状況に応じて、工房主が使い分けていることがわかった。頼母子講は入札式であり、毎回の基準価格が一人20,000ルピーと高額である上に、落札できるかは確約されておらず、利率も変動する。宝石業者の利子率は低いが、金を担保にする必要がある。インフォーマル金融業者は担保が不要で資金を借りられるが、利子率が著しく高い。そのために、こうした金融業者にアクセスできるのは、ある程度の規模と資金力を持った工房であり、こうした資金へのアクセスが可能になるかが、下請け工房からハブ工房へ変容できるかの大きな要因であることがわかった。中東との関わりでは、ダーラーヴィーから革製品がドバイやサウジアラビアに輸出されていることが確認できた。あるムスリムはサウジアラビアに革製品の卸売店を開業していた。また別のムスリムはドバイで革製品を生産・販売し、一部の製品をムンバイから輸入していた。共に輸出を主導していたのは、高等教育を受けたムスリムたちであり、ビハール州に出自を持っていた。そのために、ビハール出身のムスリムが中東のムスリムと新たなネットワークを構築して、製品を輸出していることが推測できる。
