ノンパラメトリック統計手法による計量分析の可能性とその有効性について、(1)方法論からの概念整理、(2)統計的特性(小標本特性)の2点から考察を行った。まず、(1)については1920〜40年代の統計関係学術誌の論文を内容別に分類した結果、1930年代後半に実証研究のスタイルの大きな変化が窺えた。この現象と科学哲学との関係を引き続き調査している。(2)については、ノンパラメトリック回帰の残差分散推定に関する特性について、コンピュータシミュレーションによって考察した。分散の推定量については、回帰残差から構成する推定量と条件付き分散から構成する推定量の2つを取り上げ、小標本から中標本までの特性を検討した。その結果、回帰残差から構成する推定量が最小2乗推定量と比べて遜色のないパフォーマンスを持つことが示された。またデータ生成プロセスが非線型の場合にも、良いパフォーマンスを持つことが明らかとなった。さらに、誤差構造が独立同一分布に従う場合には、回帰残差から構成する推定量の方が、条件付き分散から構成する推定量よりも優れていることがわかった。さらに、推定量のバイアスが推定する(未知の)平均関数の形と、band-widthの大きさに依存することが明らかとなった。また小標本ではAMSEが最小となるband-widthの大きさが、理論的な値と異なっていることが、実験の結果明らかとなった。この結果の一部は、理論・計量経済学会1996年度大会において報告した。現在、これらの残差推定量を用いたときの、回帰係数の検定についての統計的性質を引き続き分析している。
