本研究では、捜し物に関係する要因の分析を、2つの方向から行なった。1つは、幼児を被験者として探索行動のプロセスを実験的に検討する方向であり,もう1つは,成人を被験者にして捜し物に関係する要因を質問紙法により探ることである。前者の研究では,幼児の空間定位の過程が知覚的か概念的かを検討した。その結果,杉村(1996)にまとめたように,幼児期において,知覚的な定位の分節度よりも概念的な定位の分節度が低い発達水準では,それ以前に比べて成績が低下する場合があることが示唆された。このような,知覚的過程と概念的過程が併存しており,それぞれの分節度と,どちらの過程が主として用いられるかにより探索行動が規定される,という観点は幼児期のみならず,乳児期から老人期の探索行動を説明する上で重要であると考えられる。後者の研究では,探索行動に関連する1つの要因として,上下や左右の混同を取り上げ,幼児期から成人期の間に,どのような混同があるかを調べた。その結果,左右,上下などの間違いは,そのような概念が獲得されていないとみなされている幼児期のみならず,成人期まで継続して起きる現象であることが明らかになった。また,探索行動を含む空間認知研究のレビューを行い,杉村(印刷中)にまとめた。その結果,感覚運動的な「生きている空間」と概念的な「理解している空間」の関係を明らかにすることが,今後の重要な課題として指摘された。
