1.関係史料の網羅的収集・整理刊行史料集・地方史・東京大学史料編纂所所蔵史料を対象として、「使節」関係史料の網羅的収集を行った。また、収集の成果を順次パーソナルコンピュータ上にデータベースとして整理・蓄積した。研究史上中心に論じられてきた六波羅探題管轄地域以外にも、多くの「使節」事例が存在することを確認できた。特に鎮西地域の事例は、質的にも、量的にも、六波羅管轄地域に匹敵するものであった。2.東京大学史料編纂所未収集史料の調査・撮影(1)1997年1月28日〜30日、和歌山県立文書館に出張し、同館寄託の「丹生文書」を調査・撮影した。(2)1997年3月18日〜22日、長崎県立対馬歴史民俗資料館に出張し、同館寄託の「宗家文庫史料」のうち「宗家判物写」と呼ばれる史料群を調査・撮影する。同史料は、散逸の危険が指摘されており、調査・撮影は緊急を要する。3.個別事例の検討と「使節」の制度的解明史料的に恵まれた鎮西地域における「使節」制度を検討すると同時に、研究史も豊富な薩摩国入来院を個別事例として検討する。鎮西「使節」の多くが、いわゆる「神領興行法」に関わって派遣されたこと、鎌倉期には守護の検断使節との間で権限分割がされていたこと、および、南北朝内乱期の軍事行動と「使節」の活動との切り分けをどう理解するかが課題であること、が明らかとなった。
