本研究の課題としたところは、日本海における地域的海運と全国的海運との相互関係の把握であったが、具体的には旧越後国頚城郡鬼舞村(現新潟県西頚城郡能生町鬼舞)の北前船主である伊藤家文書の調査・分析を中心に捉えた。年度内に4度の現地調査を行い、同家所蔵の膨大な史料群のうち、以前の予備的調査の成果も含めて、廻船経営帳簿などを中心とした約1500点の史料の現状記録・目録作成が終了した。上記史料群の分析から、当家を中心とした越後西部の北前船経営は、特に従来分析が進んでいた越前・加賀の北前船と比較して、およそ以下のような特質を持っていたことが明らかになりつつある。(1)伊藤家の廻船経営は17世紀以来のものであるが、18世紀後期と明治20年代を画期として隆盛・衰退してゆく点は、他地域の北前船と共通している。(2)しかしながら、幕末期に至るまで登り荷の中心は越後の米であり、この時期蝦夷地産物に登り荷を特化させてゆく他地域の北前船とは対照的である。伊藤家と蝦夷地・北海道との関係は明治以降急速に深化する。(3)この点とも関わって、伊藤家の廻船経営は出身地の地域的市場との関係が他地域の北前船に比べて大きな比重を占めている。能生・名立からの魚肥・雑穀購入のほか、新潟で蝦夷地産物を買う事例もあり、特に新潟・直江津のような拠点港湾の問屋との関係が大きな意味を持っていたことが窺える。なお当家文書目録の印刷・配布や分析結果の発表については、現在準備・執筆中である。また補助的な調査として新潟・直江津の問屋関係史料調査(現地調査)、蝦夷地の関連資料収集をおこない、上記の論点の補強につとめた。なお予定していた岩船郡地域については、史料利用上の困難が判明したため、今後の機会を期すこととなった。

This study focuses on the investigation and analysis of the relationship between regional shipping in the Sea of Japan and shipping across the country.
