従来国立歴史民俗博物館によって,多くの成果が挙げられた青森県北津軽郡市浦村十三湊遺跡で発掘調査を実施した。そして,他の発掘調査された港湾都市遺跡での資料も検討しながら,12世紀から15世紀における,北東日本海域の港湾都市遺跡検出の遺構の時期的変化とその歴史的背景を遺物論,特に土器様式論と関連させて考察し社会史的研究にまで高め,中世港湾都市成立及び展開の歴史的契機を探ろうと試みた。(1)平成8年6月1日から同年7月22日には、十三湊遺跡での発掘調査のための準備を行った。現地で地権者との折衝、地元教育委員会への発掘届の提出、調査に必要な消耗品の購入。(2)平成8年7月23日から同年8月7日には、十三湊遺跡の発掘調査を実施し、調査成果検討会を現地で実施し、検討成果に基づいて地籍図との照合、検出遺跡のデータ処理を実施した。(調査補助員12人使用)。(3)平成8年9月1日から同年9月30日には、富山大学人文学部考古学研究室にて、大学備品のパーソナル・コンピューターとコンピューター・ソフトを使用して、遺構データ処理を実施した。(4)平成8年10月1日から同年10月20日には、報告書作成のための準備と原稿の作成。
