ガリレオの俗語による言語表現の特徴がどのように形成されていったかを探っていくための研究対象として、まず彼のピサ時代(1589-1592)の詩作品『ト-ガを身につけることに対するカピ-トロ』(Capitolo contro il portar la toga)をとりあげた。この作品の分析をとおして、20代半ばに書かれたこの諧謔詩のなかに、すでにはっきりと、彼の障害をつうじてその精神の根底にあり続けた真理を求めるさいの「明晰性」とアイロニ-をふくんだ「論争的性格」が存在していることが確認された。カピ-トロという詩の形式(三行詩節によって構成される、おもに諧謔を目的としたもの)は特に16世紀前半に活躍したトスカ-ナの詩人フランチェスコ・ベルニによって用いられた。彼の諧謔詩は当時大流行してたくさんの追従者を生んだ。チェッコ・アンジョリエ-リからマキャヴェッリにいたる、トスカ-ナの諧謔的・批判的な精神の伝統に棹をさして、また直接にはこのベルニに触発されて、ガリレオは問題の詩を書いたのであった。講義をするとき以外にもト-ガを身につけなければならないという当時のピサ大学の規則に反対するためのプロパガンダであったこの作品のなかでは、その規則そのものや大学当局・同僚の大学教授たちに対するひじょうに論争的な批判的態度だけではなく、衣服という社会制度がもたらす人間間の差異化を「幻想」だ看破することで、常識の皮膜を剥いて真理を暴くガリレオの明晰な態度もはっきりと見て取れるのである。以上の研究結果は拙論「ガリレオの諧謔詩『ト-ガを身につけることに対するカピ-トロ』について」のなかにまとめた。また上述の研究と並行して、『小天秤」における記述の「具体性」や『築城論』等における説明的な「わかりやすさ」といった点についても研究を進め、現在も続行中である。
