ネパールのグルンと呼ばれる人びとの間では、近年、民族運動を背景とした土着の宗教的知識の再評価の動きがみられる。特徴的なのは、知識人や宗教職能者らがグルンの儀礼的実践や宗教的世界観のもつ意味や価値を、グローバルな言説や科学的知識と結びつけて語り始めているという点である。本研究は、土着の宗教的知識がグローバルな言説や科学的知識を通して変換・翻訳されることで再び民族の知識として顕在化するという一連の実践を「再帰的翻訳」と概念化し、今日のグルン社会における知識生成のありようを探求するものである。本研究計画の一年目にあたる2022年度は、インターネットを通じたデータ収集と文献研究を主とした研究活動を実施した。ネパールでは1990年の以降、諸民族による民族運動が展開されてきたが、グルンの人々が民族運動において焦点化してきたものの一つに宗教をめぐる問題がある。グルンの民俗宗教の基盤となっているのは、宗教職能者が保持し儀礼において詠唱される口頭伝承だが、地域により偏差がある上、儀礼言語で詠唱されるため、一般のグルンの人々にとってはその内容の理解が難しい。そのため、民俗宗教の伝統性を訴える人々はその求心力を高めるため、儀礼やそこで詠唱される口承伝統の意味や意義についての演説をしばしば行っている。これまで調査・研究結果の中でも特に注目しているのが、民俗宗教を「シャーマニズム」と表象し発信する語りである。成立宗教と異なり、儀礼実践を柱とするグルンの民俗宗教には名がないため、自らの宗教に関する名乗りが困難な状況にあった。そのような中で見られるようになったのが、民俗宗教をシャーマニズムと形容する語りである。現在のところ、そのような表象がどのレベルで普及しているのかは不明であるが、来年度以降は現地調査も含めた研究活動を行うことでさらなるデータ収集と分析を行うことを計画している。
