Development of Self-learning Multi-media Materials for International Students to Improve Communicative Abilities

Today, the number of international students studying in Japan amounts to about 51,000 (Ministry of Education, 1997), and 90% of them come from Asian countries. However, the facilities and educational systems at universities and colleges are not good enough for rapidly increased international students, which has been interrupting their motivations to study in Japan recently.The main problems concerned with difficulties of international students studying in Japan should be considered to derive from deference of institution, lack of information, troubles of study, and maladjustment to Japanese society. As to their troubles of study, especially to the instructional contents, methods and skills, we have been promoting the research to aim at improvement of informatics education, which help them improve information literacy. We have thought most of improvement of their communicative abilities such as verbal, non-verbal and media-utilized communication skills, picking up the following 4 points … More of view : (1) information to international students, (2) training of information literacy, (3) development of instructional materials, and (4) "instructional designing and evaluation" and "instructional skills" in the classes for international students.In the interim report we showed some actual classes for international students, investigated the participants' opinions, and mentioned the necessity of self-learning multimedia materials and the outline of the educational contents necessary for them.In this report we mainly proved the effectiveness of the self-learning multimedia materials and the textbooks we had developed and utilized. Furthermore we investigated homepages opened by higher educational institutions such as universities all over Japan.In consequence of these investigation and practice we mentioned the importance of giving most adequate support and guidance to each individual, and improving our educational methods and skills that are commonly adapted to Japanese students as well, in the classes where there are a variety of students of different backgrounds and readiness, and proposed the curriculum and what is really requested in the future guidance of international students.
