日常・社会生活に見られる関数・統計概念を調べるために,昭和5年度,10年度,15年度,25年度,35年度,45年度,平成4年度に発行された朝日新聞を研究対象とした。その結果,昭和25年以前の新聞に現れる関数・統計概念は,国の予算に代表されるような予定・記録的図表に数字が付されるもので,グラフによる統計図表は,各年代とも10個未満である。このことは,戦後(昭和20年)いち速くS.A.Rice(米国,統計基準局長)が来日したこと,文部省が新教育指針第2部(昭和22年)において,統計は現代生活の全てに欠くことができないと強調した事実を裏づける。昭和25年の新聞では経済欄を中心に,統計・関数概念を含む内訳,棒図,経過,絵入り図表や統計地図等,種類が豊富になっており,その頻度も以前にくらべてかなり多い。昭和35年の新聞では,政治,経済,世界,文化欄等に各種の統計図表が現れており,その頻度も多い。この背景には,昭和20年代の日本が,国民に統計的知識は民主主義の深さを示すものとして,その養成を期待していたこと,昭和35年政府が掲げる所得倍増論には,関数・統計的知識を多分に含んでいたことがあげられる。昭和45年,平成4年の各新聞には,情報社会が反映して統計図表が繁茂に現れる。中には,幾つかの図表が組み合わされ,その解釈・読み取りには高度な数学的な知識を必要とするグラフも存在する。数学教育的立場から,これらの統計・情報を指導する場合には,データは数量部分と意味部分が一体となっている情報であること,分布が背後に潜んでいることを子供に認識させる必要がある。このような数学教育的立場から,新聞や学校教育に現れる関数・統計的概念を題材とする調査問題を関発して小学校高学年,および中学生に実施した。調査問題の構成は,図表の意味,活用に関わる問題,関数・統計的知識を活用する推論に関わる問題からなる・調査問題には,昭和10年代の資料,昭和20年代に用いられた学力テスト問題が含まれている。図表の読み・書きや目的に応じて図表を選択する能力に関する問題は,小学生,中学生とも成績が良好である。しかし,指数等を用いて系列的に統計処理する能力,見いだされた関数から先を見通す推論能力に難点が見られる。また,観測値の中に明らかに省く必要があるデータに直面しても,省かずに処理をするというようなアルゴリズム的な考え方をする子供が多い。集団の傾向や特性を判断する問題においては,データや図表が与えられている場合には成績がよいものの,予測値によって特性を把握する問題には抵抗が強い。このことは,学校数学においては,目的に応じて数学的な知識や公式を活用するという柔軟な指導が必要であることを示唆するものである。研究全体を通して得られた知見は,高度に発達した情報化社会を迎えて,対象知識,推論知識,メタ知識を内包する関数・統計学習は,学校カリキュラムが社会から遅れがちにならないためにも,今以上に強調される必要のあることである。
