The purpose of this study is to examine the management and improvement of the air-conditioning and heating system based upon the survey on the thermal environment under air-conditioning and heating at homes for the aged. in 1997, we did an interview survey about their ways of air-conditioning and heating, and in winter, we conducted a survey of the thermal environment at heated homes. In 1998. we conducted a survey at air-conditioned homes in summer. We did our survey at 6 homes in regions of different climate ; 4 homes in Niigata prefecture and 2 homes in Aichi prefecture. A summary of the results is as follows.1. The air-conditionings of the homes are all fan-coil units and they were installed in the center of the room on the ceiling. As for heating systems, three homes in Niigata had floor heating installed.2. They were using air-conditionings according to the weather conditions outside. At the homes in Aichi, air-conditions were turned on and off intermittently, and the thermometer registered over 30゚CC on many days during the survey.3, The temperature of the heated rooms was a little high. The average temperature of the day was lower at homes in Aichi.4. All the four homes in Niigata were humidified. Two of them were using ultrasonic humidifier for domestic use in their living rooms. At the other two homes, humidifiers were installed in the air-conditionings. However, the humidifying function at one home of the two had some possibilities to work but worked after checking.5. At all the homes, the staff worried about the low humidity while heating. In order to prevent the infection of disease such as influenza, it would be necessary to raise relative humidity by setting up the temperature lower and to reexamine the ways of humidifying.
