We have previously proposed a new, achromatic reflective TNLCD, and STNLCD with one polarizer and one retardation film. The LCDs enable creation of are reflective color LCD using a color-mixing system such as the micro color filter type. We have studied by computer simulation the electro-optical properties of the LCDs, and we found that the LCDs provided a high-brightness, high-contrast ratio and achromatic display by optimization of cell parameters. With these optimized conditions, we have fabricated 24-cm (9.5- in.)-diagonal VGA monochrome and 512-color reflective TNLCDs. We achieved a reflectance of monochrome and color reflective TNLCD of more than 180 and 90% respectively with*15 degree of the detector angle, with peak reflectance comparable with standard white (BaSO4) ; the maximum contrast ratio of both is 6 : 1. These values are acceptable for reflective LCDs.However, the TNLCD of the normally black mode has the problem that the higher the resolution is, the lower the luminance becomes due to the space between electrodes. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed a new normally white mode achromatic reflective TNLCD, composed of the above mentioned normally black mode reflective TNLCD and one liquid-crystal polymer film with a twist angle of the same magnitude, but with an opposite-handed to the LC layer. The electrooptical properties oh the LCD were numerically analyzed, and it was found that several sets of solutions exist for obtaining an achromatic image with high luminance as well as high contrast ratio.Furthermore, we have proposed a new color LCD using birefringent effect, composed of the STNLCD with a single polarizer and one retardation film. The LCD has advantage f low cost because of no color filter, and high resolution because of no parallax. The electro-optical properties of the LCD were numerically analyzed, and it was found that several sets of solutions exist for obtaining a multi-color image to be acceptable for reflective LCDs.
