本研究の目的は、急速に進むICT関連技術・需要の高まりの影で、子どもたちが抱えるメディア利用関連の弊害について、エビデンスに基づく対策を検討し、その社会実装を通じて子どもたちに健全なメディア利用を促す支援を行うことである。メディア・エンパワメント強化とは、子ども自身の考えや感覚によって、メディアの持つ影響力に気づき、メディアに関わる行動を自身で制御できるようにする能力を強化することを意味する。その核となる要素は、子どもがメディア利用に伴う危険性に気づきながら、メディア接触に伴う「自制心」や「感情調整能力」を高めることである。本研究が挑戦的研究としての意義がある理由として、1)子どものメディア利用に関係する諸問題について、一時の取り締まり的対策ではなく、恒常的な対処に焦点を絞っている点、および2)メディア利用に関わる諸問題の原因を子どもの衝動性や感情表出に求め、それらの対処として自制心や感情調整能力の強化に着目している点である。令和4年度には、介入プログラム開発のためのフォーマティブ・リサーチとして、児童における現在のメディア利用状況、種々の問題への態度、およびメディア利用に伴って生じる衝動性に対して感情調整を行う対処方略を明らかにするために以下にあげる2種類の調査を実施した。調査1では、ゲーム、ソーシャル・ネットワーク・サービス、web のメディア利用を毎日熱心に行っている小学生を対象にオンライン会議（Zoom）によってインタビュー調査を行った。調査2 では、4・5・6年生男女児童を対象に，Health Action Process Approach における動機づけ局面について、主に自由記述による調査を行った。以上2つの調査の結果を精査し、令和5年度に開発・実施する介入プログラムに盛り込むつもりである。
