本研究では、「自閉スペクトラム症（ASD）のある人では、定型発達の人では意識に上りにくい低次感覚野での感覚情報が無選別に意識に上ってしまいがちであり、そのことが感覚過敏などの感覚の問題につながるのではないか」ということを仮説として、その検証を目指す。その上で、ニューロフィードバック等による介入の可能性を検討する。したがって、まず脳機能計測にもとづいて計算される意識の状態と、感覚の問題の種類や大きさを比較することで、この仮説を検証する。予算の採択を受けて令和4年度は、感覚の問題の主観的な困りごとに関する基礎的な調査に加えて、研究分担者・協力者と議論を行い、作業仮説について、検討するとともに実験課題・撮像方法について議論した。一方、感覚の困りごとに関する調査に関しては、困りごとの内容とセルフケアについて成果をまとめることができた。感覚の問題として、日常生活の中で発達障害者が最も困っているのは、聴覚の問題であるものの、発達障害者のうちASD者は、触覚の問題を最もつらいと感じている人が少なくないことが判明した（Wada et al., 2023 Front. Psychiatry）。一方、まぶしさ（視覚）やうるささ（聴覚）に関しては、サングラスや耳栓等で比較的対応可能な反面、聞き取りの困難や固有感覚の問題等は対応が困難であることが明らかになった。以上の成果をまとめて、セルフケアが可能な問題と難しい問題についての質的・量的研究を論文発表した（Wada et al., 2023 Front. Child Adolesc. Psychiatry）。
