飼養されている全ての動物の生活の質を向上させるために，動物の立場に立ち，動物に対して与える痛みや苦痛，制限を最小限に抑えるという考え方はアニマルウェルフェアと呼ばれ，国際的に認知されている．牧場や動物園等の複数個体が飼養される環境では，アニマルウェルフェアの観点から，動物を適切に飼養するために個体毎の管理が重要であり，動物の個体識別が必要である．よって，本研究では行動的特徴を用いた動物の個体識別手法の開発を目的とし，動物の自然な動きを用いることや非侵襲的な手段を用いること等を技術的な達成目標とする．令和4年度は研究代表者が所属する機関の所在地の近隣にある動物園の協力を得て，飼育員へのヒアリングと現地視察を行った．当該動物園で飼養されている動物の数や，飼養環境，機材設置環境，動物への影響などを考慮に入れながら個体識別の対象とする動物を選定した．また，選定した動物の行動を立体的に記録するための機材の選定や設置方法の検討などを行った．さらに，個体識別手法の設計にも取りかかった．まずは人の行動を記録したデータセットを用いて行動的特徴を用いた個体識別に適した物体検出手法の検討を行い，使用する識別手法の候補を選定した．また，令和5年度以降に円滑に動物の行動を記録できるようにするために，研究代表者と同じ所属機関に所属する獣医学を専門とする研究者から助言を受け，同所属機関の動物実験専門委員会への動物実験の申請準備を行った．
