East Asia temperate zone and Oceania temperate zone are quite different in flora, but it was expected that the life form, especially growth pattern and wood anatomy maybe similar because of similar ecological conditions such as temperature, moisture and others. For resolving the problem of phylogenetic relationships and their diversification in similar environmental condition (temperate mesic zones), comparative anatomy of vegetative structure (wood and meristematic tissues) and DNA analysis was planned. Four field researches were conducted in northern and southern hemisphere temperate zones during this project ; east Nepal and New Zealand in 1997, Southeast China in 1998, and Australia in 1999. During those field research wood samples, DNA samples and herbarium specimens as voucher for those samples were collected ; 400 wood samples, 250 DNA samples and 8000 sheets of herbarium specimens in Nepal ; 180 wood samples, 120 DNA samples and 580 herbarium specimens in New Zealand ; 210 wood samples, 390 DNA samples and 1580.sheets of herbarium specimens in China ; and 240 wood samples, 600 DNA samples and 1200 sheets of herbarium specimens in Australia. After identification of those voucher specimens, anatomical studies and DNA analytical studies have been continued.
