A Computer Ethnology of 18th Century Criminal Cases of East Asia

该项目的目的是利用选定的刑事案件和有关的法典，在其社会文化背景下描绘和比较家庭和亲属结构。由于这些数据均为汉字，本项目也是东亚法律汉字计算机化的试点项目。该项目的一些成就如下。(1)建立东亚四国核心刑法数据库。(2)刑事主要来源的选择进行比较研究。(3)收集中国尚未出版的18 ~ 20世纪的新、罕见刑事案件。原始文件以手写形式保存在北京国家档案馆，不对公众开放。(4)创建不同层次的数据库：用于全文检索的未分析文件2。对所有东亚国家共有的一套大分类进行分析，以便进行比较调查。具有进一步分析功能的专用数据库(5)开发新的法律分析类别。(6)中国、日本、韩国、越南亲属关系研究综述。(7)获得了从家谱、户籍等其他类型的历史资料中无法获得的新型亲属关系信息。（八）划定不能用现有计算机程序计算机化的汉字，按照国际标准制定汉字编码制度。(9)为东亚家庭、法律、社会和文化的研究开辟了新天地。（10）为今后历史人类学、法律人类学、计算机民族学等新型研究的继续研究奠定了坚实的基础。

The purpose of the project is to delineate and compare the family and kinship structure in its socio-cultural context utilizing selected criminal cases and related legal codes. Since all of these data are in Chinese characters the project is also a pilot project for computerizing East Asian law in Chinese characters.Some of the accomplishments of the project are as follows.(1)Establishment a core criminal law database of four East Asian Countries.(2)Criminal selection of primary sources for comparative studies.(3)Acquisition of new and rare Chinese criminal cases of 18^<th> century not yet been published even in China. The original documents are in handwritten form and are stored in the National Archives in Peking that are not accessible to the general public.(4)Creation of different level database :1. The unanalyzed file for full text retrieval2. Analyzed file with a set of broad categories common to all East Asian Countries for comparative inquiries3. Special purpose data base with further analysis(5)Development of new analysis categories for law.(6)Review of Studies on kinship in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam.(7)Obtained new type of information about kinship which were unobtainable so far with other type of historical sources such as genealogies and household registry.(8)Delineated those Chinese characters that cannot be computerized with the present Computer programs and developed coding system for these characters according to the international standard.(9)Broke new ground for the studies of East Asian families, law, society and culture.(10)And laid a firm foundation for continued research in the future for new type of studies in historical anthropology of law, and computer ethnology.
