マルチメディアDB(データベース)、中でも浮世絵DBにおけるイメージインデキシングのために従来の文字キーワードに代わるイメージキーワード作成アルゴリズムの開発を行なう。ここでは、主に浮世絵に描かれた役者絵を扱い、その同定と分類手法の開発を行う。従来、感性表現には印象語が多く用いられてきたが、ここではテキストベースでなく、イメージを直接扱えるシステムを目指す。顔の部品(目、鼻、輪郭など)の特徴は言葉により表現することもできるが、ここでは、ノンバーバル表現、例えば、線画表現をそのまま用いることを考える。即ち、顔の特徴をそのまま線画で描き入力すると、よく似た役者を探し出して提示(ブラウジング)してくれるシステムが構築できれば、江戸演劇の研究を大きく支援することができる。イメージインデキシングのためのツールとして自由曲線による最良近似、即ち最適制御点の自動抽出については前年度までにほぼ開発を終えており、今年度は更に効率化・高速化を目指してアルゴリズムの開発・改良を行った結果、制御点間の類似度計算に、単にユークリッド距離でなく、方向性を考慮した距離を導入するとよりよい結果が得られることが分かった。口は表情の表現に大きく貢献し、人物同定には特別な役者のみに役立つ。一般には、人物同定には目、鼻、顎の先の形状が重要であるが、それら顔部品単体では正確な同定は難しく、各部品間の相対的位置や面特徴を考慮すると高い識別率が得られた。また、3Dマッチング(2D画像から3D形状を類推してマッチングを行う)も試みたが、その過程で確認された可能性と柔軟性を生かすためにも効率的なアルゴリズムの開発は今後の課題である。現在、顔の形状特徴を表す印象語と典型例の収集・整理を行っており、これらの基礎資料を基に人間にとって優しいしかも示唆に富んだ柔軟なDBシステムを目指していきたい。
