项目摘要

本年度は、研究計画に則り、近世北野社における神仏習合に関する調査研究、学会での報告・学術雑誌への投稿を行った。はじめに、調査研究について。具体的な検討内容としては、北野社の内部組織構成員であった社僧（宮仕）の存在形態に関する分析を行ったことが挙げられる。宮仕は、神社に奉仕する存在であったが、現在の我々が想像する神主の姿とは異なり、僧体であったことが先行研究において指摘されていた。そこで、研究の第一段階として、そのことを「拙僧」や「社僧」といった史料上の文言から確認するとともに、彼らの経済基盤について検討した。経済基盤をめぐっては、彼らが賽銭だけでなく、社外の信仰者が神社で祈祷を行うに当たり、その窓口となり、その手数料を徴収することで生計を成り立たせていたことを史料から明らかにし、これまでの近世宗教史研究が論じてきた民間宗教者の一類型として捉えうる存在であることを解明した。一方、彼らは、僧体でありながら、自己認識としては「神職」であったことが如上の作業の中で明らかとなった。そこで、研究の第二段階として、「神職」という自己認識が成立する彼らの思想体系について検討を行った。これらの作業を通じて、外形としての僧侶の姿と、認識としての神職の姿が併存する宮仕の存在形態を明らかにした。その結果、北野社における神仏習合の一面を照射することができ、従来の近世神社・神職史研究が十分に照射していない神仏習合の実態を提示することができた。次に、学会での報告・学術雑誌への投稿について。学会報告としては、上記の内容に関する基礎的事柄について、奈良歴史研究会において報告し、参加者との議論を通じて、問題点の所在の確認などを行うことができた。また、改めて近世北野社の内部組織について総括的な検討を行い、近世史フォーラムにおいて報告した。以上の二報告について論文化を進め、ともに学術雑誌に投稿を行った。
