本研究の課題は、神仏習合の様相に焦点を当てつつ、近世神社制度の構造と特質を明らかにすることであり、これまでに十分な研究蓄積のない大神社（朝廷との結びつきの強かった社格の高い神社）における神仏習合の様相について、その具体像を解明するという手法を採る。本年度は、門跡寺院による大神社への関与の形態を解明することを最終目標とし、研究を進めた。まず、北野社と曼殊院門跡を素材とし、両者の関係を分析した。北野社関係史料を分析した結果、曼殊院門跡が北野社構成員の官位執奏・叙任を行っていたことを確認するとともに、それが江戸幕府による神社編成という問題に如何に位置づくのかを明らかにした。また、朝廷が曼殊院門跡を支持したことにより、北野社と曼殊院門跡の対立が収束した事実を発見した。以上の成果は、「神社・門跡・社僧―宮寺としての近世北野社―」と題して学会で報告し（日本史研究会大会、於京都学園大学）、論文として活字化した（『日本史研究』666、2018年2月）。次に、気比大社・石清水八幡宮・祇園社と青蓮院門跡を素材とし、各大神社と青蓮院門跡の関係を分析した。宮内庁書陵部が所蔵する青蓮院門跡関係史料を閲覧・複写して検証するとともに、各大神社に伝来する史料群を分析した結果、気比大社については、青蓮院門跡が神社構成員の人事権を掌握するなどの強い支配をしていたのに対し、石清水八幡宮・祇園社の場合は、青蓮院門跡が神社構成員（社僧）の得度戒師を務めるという程度に留まっており、大神社ごとに門跡寺院との関係が異なることを明らかにした。以上の成果は、「近世の祇園社と青蓮院―神社と門跡の「由緒」―」と題して学会で報告し（ふとで会、於京都府立大学）、現在、論文の執筆を進めている。なお、本研究は、当初三年間実施する予定であったが、所属機関の変更に拠り、本年度限りでの実施となったことを付記しておく。
