项目摘要

日本における〈先祖〉と〈墓〉概念・実践を歴史的存在として捉える場合、近代という時代はきわめて重要な意味を持つ。本研究は、先祖祭祀が日本近代という社会的文脈のなかでどのように構想され、現実化され、消費・受容され、現在に至るのかについて、いくつかのトピックを思想史や制度史、民衆史を横断した記述によって段階論的に明らかにすることで、日本の宗教状況の解明に貢献することを目指すものである。採用3年度目は、大正期以降にみられる、「文明化」された先祖観と対極をなすような“先祖霊のタタリ”や“墓相による家運の盛衰”といった、民衆的な先祖供養に関する言説とニーズの事例として、昭和戦前期において発生・台頭したいわゆる「墓相学」という宗教運動について調査研究を行った。昭和戦前期に刊行された墓相学関連の書籍や雑誌記事等を蒐集し、そこにおける墓相学草創の契機や、墓相家が誕生した背景、そしてどのような人々が墓相学のクライアントとなったのかについて分析を加えた。昭和戦前期は、近代墓地法制ならびに家墓の普及に伴う全国的な墓制の動揺、また都市における無縁墓の増加によって、社会全体で墓への関心が高まっていた。特に神道界・仏教界では陵墓や英霊公葬の問題が活発に議論され、日本民族固有の〈あるべき墓〉の姿が探求されて墓相学が結実していったことが理解された。また、家の没落や断絶への不安を抱え、自家にとっての〈あるべき墓〉のイメージを持たない人々が墓相学のクライエントとなっていったことがわかった。さらに、墓相家へのインタビュー調査を行うことで、宗教化がいかにして墓相学にたどりついたかの遍歴を明らかにすることができた。この研究成果の詳細は、2016年6月の「宗教と社会」学会において口頭発表し、また2016年度内に論文として発表する予定である。
