Social communication skills challenges affect over 400,000 children aged 3-11 in the UK, who are diagnosed with autism and other developmental speech delay challenges. Effective interventions and therapy exist and are most effective in early years. However, providing this crucial support is constrained by the scarcity of qualified professional resources and by the limitations of government funding. Meanwhile, demand for support services continues to rise along with the increase in autism diagnosis. Our project builds on previous R&D we conducted, to develop and demonstrate a prototype for an innovative mobile app that helps autistic children and children with other speech delay challenges, improve their speech and communication skills. The project combines speech recognition technology with proven speech therapy and gamification, to provide an effective, accessible, engaging and affordable speech training solution. The project provides crucial support for autistic children. It helps them develop their communication skills, self-confidence, social inclusion and quality of life. It also improves their chances of inclusion in mainstream education, and of future employment and independent living. The project also helps the children's families, and has a positive impact on society and the national economy.
