Boost's customers have shown that they don't want levels of complications, fuss, ongoing medicalisation or tech for tech's sake. They want a product that helps their clothes to sit nicely against their bodies, they want to feel confident and comfortable. We know this because women have told us; both through our human-centred design activity engaging 160 women in co-design activity and our ongoing customer relationships with our 700 plus community of Boost Breast Form wearers. Having a full or partial mastectomy and experiencing the associated treatment is particularly disempowering. Boost's innovative re-design of the breast form has gone some way towards offering more choice and empowerment, particularly for women of colour who have been underserved by breast prosthesis design assumptions. This project will deliver a feasibility study that will create a use-case process for a game-changing inert 3D filament from Photocentric, world leaders in the chemical development of 3D printing materials. We will become beta-testers for this innovative resin. We want to push the boundaries of silicone manufacturing and challenge the idea that customisation is exclusive, high-end and expensive. We will deliver a project which will, for the first time ever, produce a 3D printable mould that will allow our softest platinum cured, medical grade silicone from Mouldlife to be moulded without inhibiting the cure or compromising the quality of the product. We will explore the minimum viable data to input into the customisation process, to ensure that women's shaper needs can be effectively captured within affordable technological parameters to identify their shaper footprint and projection requirements, and build a route-map for the delivery of this service that will make a custom breast shaper become an inclusive option, as opposed to an exclusive one. We think this will particularly address the bias of the breast-prosthetic industry, which currently offers a predominantly white-normative approach to shape contours and colour finishes that does not account for the diversity, wellbeing and proportions that many women require. Our project will finally deliver a solution to fill a market gap between off-the-shelf and expensive, high end custom breast forms that can be replicated, scaled and adapted to meet the needs of women around the world.
