项目摘要
PROJECT SUMMARY
The proposed project will build capacity by training community members within seven
tribal nations to use an innovative, culturally appropriate community-based mental health first
response system. While completing our NARCH VIII program activities, we developed
academic/community partnerships within these tribal communities, and we learned about each
community’s existing resources and infrastructure. We will leverage these partnerships and apply
this knowledge to complete the NARCH X Capacity Building activities. More specifically, we will
seed the seven tribes with individuals who are equipped to help experiencing mental health crises,
particularly youth in recovery from substance use disorders. Early Capacity Building Core
activities will include assisting with the development of the core First Face modules and training
Healing Lodge research staff to conduct research activities. Later, working alongside tribal
Working Groups, we will expand First Face by developing additional modules, including tribe-
specific modules;; revise the First Face curriculum in response to feedback from trained
community members;; continue to build research capacity;; and develop enduring and formalized
First Face training materials. During the final year of the project, we will train hundreds of tribal
community members in the First Face program and lay the foundation for a self-sustaining First
Face training center at the Healing Lodge, complete with a First Face “Train-the-Trainers”
program that the Healing Lodge can offer to interested tribes and individuals. In sum, we will build
capacity for tribal communities to learn and apply the First Face program, thus sparking a mental
health culture change across these communities.
