ADMINISTRATIVE CORE: ABSTRACT
The administrative core will be responsible for coordinating work across the projects and research cores of this
PPG and enhance cooperation and collaboration of this team with others in the broad radiation community. The
major tasks of the AC are: (1) to create processes that enhance streamlined and integrated operations across
all projects and cores and facilitate data exchange and budget management; and (2) to promote dissemination
and facilitate technical exchange among the projects and core and within the broad scientific community. The
Administrative Core will be housed at Northwestern University. The Steering Committee will include PIs of all
projects and cores and will be responsible for decision-making for the program. The general management style
to be used will be a team-approach as much as possible since this fosters collegiality and interaction. All opinions
will be weighed and viewed as important in the decision-making process; decisions will be by consensus unless
this is impossible. In the rare event that it is not possible or that the best interests of the project are at risk the
PD will make a decision. Communication between team members will be largely by internet or teleconference.
Over the past two years, we have already established a practice of weekly zoom meetings and we intend to
continue with this practice. Each year the External Scientific Advisory Group (ESAC) (with members still un-
named as recommended by NIH) will be called in to help critique the team and determine approaches that can
successfully improve the working. A written report will be expected from this group to help point out problematic
areas that perhaps have remained unidentified by the team. Issues to be considered in evaluation will include
(but are not limited to): strong integration with others, publications, cross-cutting results, patents and inventions,
and where appropriate success of graduate students and post-docs. Overall, this core will be responsible for
organization, management, decision-making, and periodic evaluations within this center, as well as protection of
intellectual property, regulatory compliance, involvement of institutional and programmatic resources, and
shared publications. This core is expected to create and implement administrative and leadership mechanisms
that will foster effective interactions within the team and with the broad community.
