As research into topics such as cancer, malaria and parasitic diseases advances and expands into drug discovery and treatment programmes, access to the tools needed to ensure successful outcomes become increasingly important. A limiting factor in the development of therapeutics is a lack of recombinant proteins for candidate drug activity assays or for mechanistic/structural studies. Research Use Only (RUO) proteins are key reagents, yet availability is often unreliable, with existing production methods either unable to generate the molecules at all, or at extremely high prices.BCL's novel Clostridial expression system has the ability to express proteins previously unobtainable in any existing expression system. This project seeks to develop and optimise this system to increase yields and tackle some of the hardest to express proteins in the field.
